Laura Sanchez Flamenco Presents:

Paper Crafts: Community Art

to Support Mothers

Join us on Feb 11th at Arts at the Armory, in Somerville, to move together and relax while making beautiful paper crafts that will be integrated into a community artifact. The expert in geometric paper crafts, @Danifolds, will guide a collective activity that will become a part of the multidisciplinary performance “Welcome to Holland!?”. You can stop by anytime from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and stay for as long as you can.

Created by the choreographer, flamenco dancer, educator and mother Laura Sanchez, “Welcome to Holland!?” explores unspoken realities of motherhood and will be presented on March 16th, 17th at the Dance Complex, in Cambridge, MA. Laura will perform a section of this work during the PAPERCRAFTS events to kick off the experience, present the work in progress and prototype the papercraft installation developed by Mary Hale.

The afternoon will be closed by an expressive flamenco exercise led by Laura Sanchez. Become part of a community that supports, embraces and empowers one another.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Somerville Arts Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

The Orchestra Book Club is thrilled to be presenting our second public performance, “Homeland Rivers”!

For all time, people have been fascinated, entranced, and moved by the rivers traversing their homelands. It is no wonder that so many artists have taken inspiration from these flowing waters. In this program, we will explore two beautiful pieces of music that paint pictures of the rivers most dear to their composers. Bedřich Smetana’s Vltava (The Moldau) is a beloved work of Czech romanticism, spinning a well-known melody with flowing ripples, culminating in a triumphant portrayal of the castle Vyšehrad. Florence Price’s Mississippi River Suite assembles the magic of Black American spirituals and popular music from the 20th century to take the listener on a journey down America’s most important river.

Please join us on Sunday, February 11th, 2024 at 3:00pm at the Center for Arts at the Armory in Somerville, MA, to experience this wonderful music. We will discuss and contextualize the works before playing them through in full, giving a richer sense of familiarity with the composers and their pieces. After the performance, you are invited to stick around for an interactive discussion, all in the “book club” spirit!

Tickets are free for all, with a suggested donation of $25/person. We rely on your generosity to keep the Orchestra Book Club offering high-quality, accessible, and engaging programming, and give us the room to grow toward the future.

If you wish to support our mission, please consider making a tax-deductible donation via our fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas.
