Summer 2018 Education Programs

We’re already planning ahead for summertime, and another season of great educational programs at the Armory!  Once again, we’ll offer a variety of programming for different ages.

In July, the Somerville Arts Council returns with their popular 3-week Musical Theater Program for ages 8-13; sign up directly with SAC!

Also in July, we’re teaming up with EarthwiseAware to run a NEW one-week, half-day program called Closer to Nature.  Participants will explore and enjoy the natural world through storytelling, nature & naturalist walks, sketching & journaling, art, and science.

In August, we’ll run three separate weeks of our popular Arts Discovery Week program for kids ages 5-10.  Sign up for one or all, or for individual sessions within the week; it’s a sampler of lots of fun, creative, and sometimes crazy art projects.

For slightly older kids (11-16), Visual Arts Week offers a similar chance to explore lots of artistic mediums throughout one week in August.

Also for 11-16 year olds, Youth Arts Arise is our FREE one-week program exploring two artistic disciplines in depth: mornings focus on one topic all week, and afternoons on another.

Sign-up for all of the summer programs run by the Armory will open on March 15.  Check back then, or email education@artsatthearmory.org to join our mailing list and be notified when it opens!

Learn Some Cool Halloween Makeup Tips This Sunday

BITES AND BRUISES – A HALLOWEEN SPECIAL

When:  Sun. Oct. 23, 2016, 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

About the class: Come learn essential skills to create your own special effects makeup! In the spirit of Halloween, we will be creating a zombie look involving bruises, scars, and rotting skin effects that can be used in many different Halloween looks.

  • Bite/ face cut: We will construct a bite on arm or neck from scar wax. You will learn how to apply wax to skin, molding it into the desired shape and tooth indents, and painting and adding blood. A cut or scratch may be added to the face.
  • Veins and decay: We will paint on top of the elements we added with wax. We will contour to create deep shadows under the eyes, emaciated cheeks and tendons to the neck, and will discolor the face with veins and the look of decaying skin.

In the last portion of the class, depending on how much time remains, you can continue to work with and explore the materials and skills we learned. You are encouraged to bring ideas of Halloween makeup you’d like to do and the instructor can demo or talk through how to go about bringing those ideas to life.

About the instructor: Sylvia Sword studies Theater at the University of Vermont where she started her journey into the world of theatrical makeup. She is an actor, teacher, and clown in the Boston area and she pursues makeup as an independent artist.
