#GIVING TUESDAY: MYSTIC LEARNING CENTER & COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY OF SOMERVILLE

Mystic Learning Center

Meet this week’s featured organization, the Mystic Learning Center (MLC). The mission of MLC is to improve the lives of low-income children and families who live at the Mystic Public Housing Development and surrounding communities.  MLC offers year round educational and recreational activities for youth ages 5 to 19 during after-school, evenings, school-year and summer vacations.

Every dollar donated to MLC through the GivingTuesday program will be used for after-school, school vacation and summer vacation slots for children between the ages of 5 and 12. The cost for one child after-school slot is $18.22 a day, and the cost for one child for a full day of vacation/summer camp is $34.00. In other words, your donation goes a long way! Give today.

Meet the fabulous Community Action Agency of Somerville (CAAS)

For 34 years CAAS has helped reduce poverty among local families and individuals while also working to change the societal conditions that cause and perpetuate poverty. They assist families and individuals in escaping poverty and becoming economically self-sufficient. They also serve as an an “emergency room” for every non-medical need an individual or family may have: housing, food, heat, education. CAAS is also a switchboard for referrals to other agencies that can help people and the center of coalitions that make a stronger Somerville.

In addition to serving individuals and families, CAAS runs the Head Start program in Somerville and Cambridge. Your GivingTuesday gift supports CAAS.

#GIVINGTUESDAY: MAPS & THE WELCOME PROJECT

MASSACHUSETTS ALLIANCE OF PORTUGUESE SPEAKERS:
For 45 years, MAPS has provided a wide range of culturally and linguistically competent health and social services for Portuguese speakers and other community members.

Somerville residents receive assistance in the areas of HIV/AIDS/STI prevention and management; domestic violence and sexual assault services, including batterer intervention; immigrant integration services, including citizenship assistance and much more; family support, including family stabilization and in-home therapy; elder services; language classes…the list goes on!

A $50 to $100 donation goes far: it could cover the cost of a month of lunches for an isolated, low-income senior citizen, or help protect a woman and her children from domestic abuse, or help an immigrant attain citizenship. Please support this week’s #GivingTuesdaySomerville feature organization MAPS today.

THE WELCOME PROJECT:
The Welcome Project builds the collective power of Somerville immigrants to participate in and shape community decisions. They provide programs for immigrant youth, adults and families that hone leadership and personal development, provide access to employment and education, help residents to learn English and the nuances of a new culture and engage more fully in the civic life of the city.

How can a donation to #GivingTuesdaySomerville help? $50 will cover a scholarship for an adult student to study ESOL for 1 14-week  semester. $100 will cover a scholarship for an adult student to study ESOL for a full academic year (28 weeks), and $250 would provide 40 hours of professional medical interpreter training for 1 bilingual high school student.

Please support The Welcome Project today with a Giving Tuesday donation!
