Call for Submissions: Winter Art Show, January 2017, Armory Cafe
Arts at the Armory invites artists of all ages and experience levels to participate in our “Winter Art Show”, to be exhibited in our Cafe during the month of January 2017.
We are looking for all kinds of creative artistic expressions having a winter theme of some sort. Snowy landscapes, hats and scarves, snowshoes, fireplaces, hockey, all things to do with winter. Perhaps you have your own associations with winter… Art emerging from your own associations is fine assuming its pertinence to the winter theme is at least marginally evident in the piece or pieces.
You may submit multiple times, up to 5 pieces per artist. There is no fee to submit!
Any technique and medium is welcome (photography, painting, charcoal, mixed media, sculpture, watercolor, drawing, etc). However, submitted pieces must be able to hang from the wall in a reasonably sized area, i.e. no free standing sculpture, no grand scale pieces which cover an entire wall.
Deadline for submissions: December 10, 2016
Show dates January 1-31, 2017
Reception Date TBD
All ages are welcome to submit
Subject matter must be suitable for all ages to view
No bigger than 14”x 17” finished size
No fee to submit
How to Submit:
- Send jpegs of each of your pieces to firstname.lastname@example.org. (Original format will be requested subsequently for all pieces selected for the show.)
- Make the subject of your email submission: “Winter Art Show Submission”
- Each jpeg should be named as “Artist_Name_#.jpg”. The # will indicate the order of your submissions. The artist’s name should be included in the file name. E.g., “Mary_Smith_1.jpg”, “Mary_Smith_2.jpg”, etc
- In the email, include a list of your submissions, indicating medium(s) and title for each piece. E.g., for Mary_Smith_1.jpg, the entry might be: 1. Charcoal, “Snowbirds”
CAFE EXHIBIT FAQ’s
Our Cafe space hosts regular visual art exhibits. For a list of current and upcoming exhibits, check out our Events/Exhibits page.
Interested in showing your work? Read on for answers to frequently asked questions, then contact email@example.com.
How long does an exhibit last?
Exhibits typically run for a calendar month, but other periods may be available by special request.
How much does it cost?
There’s no charge for the exhibit itself or to apply. If you sell any art, we take a commission (20%).
What kind of work can be displayed?
The Cafe mainly shows two-dimensional pieces that can hang on the walls (paintings, photography, drawings, quilts, etc). We’re an all-ages venue, but otherwise have no restrictions on subject matter.
How many pieces of art can I hang?
There are three 5×5 foot wall spaces to exhibit large art works. We also have 3×4 and 4×4 foot wall spaces for medium or smaller sized pieces.
How do I hang my work?
The Cafe has picture railing around the room. Metal hooks hang on the railing, with fishing line (or ribbons, string, twine – whatever you prefer!) hanging down to support the artwork. Alternately, you can also use the plastic hooks that are designed to be removable on any non-brick walls, or blue painter’s tape is acceptable for lightweight pieces. Please note it is not possible to nail into the walls or use fasteners that would peel off the paint or otherwise damage the walls.
How do I apply?
Email firstname.lastname@example.org and include information about yourself as an artist, your artwork, and information on how to see samples of your work (link to online portfolio, attached images, times you can visit with a physical portfolio, etc).
How far in advance do you schedule?
This varies depending on demand for exhibits and staff availability in our office, but typically we’re scheduling exhibits a minimum of 2-3 months out, and sometimes as much as 6-8 months out.
