Stephanie Vecellio is a local illustrator who has lived in Somerville since 2014. She grew up in Connecticut and earned her BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. She works in Communications at the Harvard Art Museums and as a freelance illustrator and designer. In 2020, she was awarded a Visual Arts Fellowship from the Somerville Arts Council and since then has been featured on SCA-TV, as the Somerville Artist of the Month, and in the Somerville Wire.

Taking inspiration from the neighborhoods of Somerville and New England (or anywhere else she might happen to be), Stephanie’s work is drawn from life using marker and pen. All her pen linework is freehanded, so that drawing becomes an act of understanding and making sense of the subject. She then aims to capture shadow and light in playful saturation, bringing unexpected color to everyday scenes.

When she’s not making art, Stephanie spends her time playing with and co-organizing Boston Belles Pinball, a women’s pinball league, and hanging out with her adorably scruffy rescue dog Zeppie. She is also a member of the Urban Sketchers Boston group, from which many of the drawings in this exhibition originated.
