Songwriters in the Round
Wed. Dec. 17, 2025 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
On December 17th David Thorne Scott (on keys) is hosting three real string-slingers for your listening pleasure at Songwriters in the Round at Arts at the Armory. From the beautiful Pioneer Valley comes Dave Dersham, who writes songs that will remind you of… of nobody, actually. His music is truly sui generis. We have missed Paul Hansen of The Grownup Noise, a good friend of the series who is bringing his rock GenX balladry back to us after a long absence. We are very excited to introduce Far as Mars (a.k.a. David Linhart), playing and singing sophisticated pop music like the Decemberists but with the sweetness you can only get from a nylon string guitar.
Our songwriters this week
Far As Mars is David Linhart with friends or solo. When alone with an acoustic guitar, David’s indie folk sound could be filed under Ben Harper and Fionn Regan. Singles such as “Bounce Back (Acoustic)” and “Arrow” showcase Far As Mars as a singer/songwriter and guitarist. instagram.com/asfarasmars
A sly humorist, cultural critic, and melancholy optimist, Northampton’s Dave Dersham in embarking on a tour to introduce listeners to his new, long-awaited third album. Dave writes cautionary songs of submerging archipelagos, the unfolding eco-dystopia, Samoan pigskin heroes, and the wonders of farmhouse remediation in the Pioneer Valley where Dave spent his formative years, meandered, and eventually returned, despite mediocre snowpack, relentless rain, and occasional periods of humid, smoke-infused summers – perhaps the newest of the new normals. “Dersham taps hopeful melodies and reverses lyrical expectations at every turn …exudes a brand of humane charm that sets him apart from every other songwriter you’ll see this year.” – James O’Brien (NYC) https://davedershammusic.com/
Paul Hansen. Bad student and class clown, turned basketball player, turned philosophy student, turned songwriter. Guitarist and songwriter for the band ‘The Grownup Noise’ with a new album coming out Feb. 6th (Show Feb. 7th at Deep Cuts) featuring the original line up of the band! http://www.thegrownupnoise.com/
Your host, David Thorne Scott, is a singer and songwriter in jazz and Americana styles. A longtime resident of Somerville, he organized Songwriters in the Round to foster a creative, dynamic music scene here. He believes that music can bring a community together like nothing else. “At a time of great conflict in our country – when words often fail us – music has the power to bridge divides… David Thorne Scott explores the intersection of Jazz and Americana, city and country, instrumentation and lyrics to create lush compositions and covers that are unifying, and healing, in their beauty.” – Laurie Fanell, Eponymous Review www.davidthornescott.com
1st & 3rd Wednesdays at ROOTED Cafe at 7 PM
Four songwriters take the stage, seated in a comfortable semi-circle. They take turns playing songs, occasionally joining in with each other on harmony vocals or guitar licks. The format encourages conversation between the writers, which gives the audience an opportunity to hear these creative people talk as if in their own living rooms. Inspired by the “guitar pulls” of the legendary Bluebird Café in Nashville.
Hosted by Somerville singer/songwriter David Thorne Scott. Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Donations welcome.
Part of the ROOTED Armory Café Series. Café menu is available here. Beer and wine also available!
