November 16 is Berklee night at Songwriters in the Round. We have four solid pro performers who you don’t get to hear on this side of the river too often. Kristin Cifelli makes music for hipsters, hippies and everyone in between, with a singular voice that is powerful yet vulnerable. Sarah Brindell is a funky singer and keyboardist that will get you smiling and grooving. Mark Simos is known worldwide for his books on songwriting as well as his compositions for Alison Krauss. And your host David Thorne Scott is working out music that fuses jazz harmonies, rock beats, and folk lyrics.

So why don’t you join us this Wednesday at Songwriters in the Round? November 16, 7pm. Only $10 for an evening of great music, entertaining anecdotes, and gripping vocals.

Songwriters in the Round
Wednesday November 16, 7pm-8:30pm
Arts at the Armory Café
190 Highland Avenue, Somerville, MA

Tickets are $10 at the door

Four songwriters, trading songs and swapping stories. And you have a front row seat.

Four songwriters take the stage, seated in a comfortable semi-circle. They take turns playing songs, occasionally joining in with each other on harmony vocals or guitar licks. The format encourages conversation between the writers, which gives the audience an opportunity to hear these creative people talk as if in their own living rooms. Inspired by the “guitar pulls” of the legendary Bluebird Café in Nashville.

Hosted by Somerville singer/songwriter David Thorne Scott. Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Part of the ROOTED Armory Café Series. Café menu is available here: https://artsatthearmory.org/rooted-cafe/rooted-menu/
Beer and wine also available!

You might hear a young up-and-coming pro, an established mid-career performer and mentor, and a cherished elder of the scene — all sharing music. The growing relationships will warm your heart and enrich your soul. Come every week as the lineup shifts and new friends are made.

Our songwriters this week:

Boston Music Award Nominee, Kristin Cifelli has been on Berklee’s Voice faculty since 2001, specializing in coaching singer/songwriters. She has toured the country, sharing the stage with artists such as Jeffrey Gaines, Chris Trapper, Marshall Crenshaw, and Rita Wilson.  Kristin’s 2011 release, Middle of Nowhere, attracted the attention of folks from hipsters to hippies, with its earthy, yet modern sound.  She is currently writing songs for pitching to TV/film, and is also working on a new EP, due out in Fall 2022.

Sarah Brindell is a songwriter, arranger, producer, vocalist, keyboardist, and full-time Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music. Raised in San Francisco, CA, by a family of professional musicians, composers and published writers, her original music blends rich harmonies, stunning vocals, and infectious grooves into a melodious sonic palette of neo-soul, jazz, samba, and reggae. With touring credits around the world, she has shared the stage and recorded with many renowned artists including Norah Jones, Carole King, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, and Raul Midon. Her original songs can be heard on many television shows including MTV’s Made. She was a panelist in the Song of the Year contest as part of VH-1’s Save the Music Foundation, as well as the Billboard World Song Contest. A Summa Cum Laude graduate from Boston University, she holds a Masters degree in Music Education, and teaches courses on the Berklee campus and Berklee Online in songwriting, harmony, ear training, arranging, improvisation and stage performance.

Mark Simos, associate professor in songwriting at Berklee College of Music, is a renowned songwriter, composer and tunesmith, teacher and writer. Over four-plus decades, Mark’s songs and “tunes from imaginary countries” have stretched musical boundaries with innovative melodies and harmonies and intricately crafted lyrics, bringing a contemporary sensibility to “neo-traditionalist” forms.
Over one hundred and fifty of Mark’s compositions have been recorded by artists, including Americana supergroup Alison Krauss and Union Station, Ricky Skaggs, Del McCoury, and Laurie Lewis. He’s co-written with artist/writers such as Lisa Aschmann, Australian rock icon Jimmy Barnes, Catie Curtis, and the Infamous Stringdusters’ Andy Hall. He’s featured on many recordings as a fiddler and guitar accompanist, and has recorded an acclaimed song-cycle album, Crazy Faith, and four albums of original and traditional fiddle music.
At Berklee, Mark creates innovative curriculum in 360° songwriting, collaboration and co-writing, guitar techniques for songwriters, and tunewriting, and leads Berklee’s American Old-Time Ensemble. He also continues to perform and teach at workshops, camps, festivals, and retreats worldwide.

David Thorne Scott is a singer and songwriter in jazz and Americana styles. A 20-year resident of Somerville, he organized Songwriters in the Round to foster a creative, dynamic music scene here. He believes that music can bring a community together like nothing else. “At a time of great conflict in our country – when words often fail us – music has the power to bridge divides… David Thorne Scott explores the intersection of Jazz and Americana, city and country, instrumentation and lyrics to create lush compositions and covers that are unifying, and healing, in their beauty.” – Laurie Fanell, Eponymous Review www.davidthornescott.com
