The New Year’s resolution for Songwriters in the Round is continued consistent excellence. We have a solid nine months’ experience programming rewarding, satisfying musical experiences, bringing people together from different communities, creating friendly vibes and emotional resonance. We plan to keep this going into 2023. The number of people in the audience goes up and down from session to session, but we have faith in the word of mouth. We trust that our friends will spread the word organically, inviting people in diverse circles to come join the party. Why do we have this faith? Because there is something different about sharing space in a room with other humans, being moved together with music, that doesn’t translate to earbuds and Zoom. We need music. We need fellowship. We need each other in order to be ourselves.

Our artists this week are a lovely mix. Thaddeus Hogarth plays virtuosic guitar, singing searing R&B and funk. Adam Gautille uses live looping technology to support his gorgeous vocal, guitar and trumpet sounds. Zoe Knight is a passionate and powerful rock and soul singer and keyboard player. And your host Eva Gertz is a raconteur with a sweet tone and a mastery of the ivories.

So ring in the new year right. Come to Songwriters in the Round Wednesday, January 4, 7pm. We’re doing this for you. Don’t miss the chance.

Songwriters in the Round
Wednesday January 4, 7pm-8:30pm
Arts at the Armory Café
190 Highland Avenue, Somerville, MA
Tickets are $10 at the door

Four songwriters, trading songs and swapping stories. And you have a front row seat.

Four songwriters take the stage, seated in a comfortable semi-circle. They take turns playing songs, occasionally joining in with each other on harmony vocals or guitar licks. The format encourages conversation between the writers, which gives the audience an opportunity to hear these creative people talk as if in their own living rooms. Inspired by the “guitar pulls” of the legendary Bluebird Café in Nashville.

Hosted by Somerville singer/songwriter David Thorne Scott. Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Part of the ROOTED Armory Café Series. Café menu is available here: https://artsatthearmory.org/rooted-cafe/rooted-menu/

Beer and wine also available!

You might hear a young up-and-coming pro, an established mid-career performer and mentor, and a cherished elder of the scene — all sharing music. The growing relationships will warm your heart and enrich your soul. Come every week as the lineup shifts and new friends are made.

Our songwriters this week

Adam Gautille is a genre-hopping singer songwriter based in Boston whose music takes inspiration from Motown, R&B, Folk and Jazz. As a multi-instrumentalist, Adam loops trumpet, guitar, piano and singing to create a unique backdrop for his original music. His day job? Playing classical trumpet for orchestras like the Boston Pops. Instagram: @AdamGautille

Eva Gertz is a singing pianist and artist of many mediums, born and raised in Melrose, MA. She attended Berklee College of Music (class of 2015) and now teaches arranging in the Contemporary Writing and Production department of the college. During the time in between, she lived in Brooklyn, NY for six years, arranged for a Broadway production, assisted top-rank composers, and performed as a dueling pianist on cruise ships and at piano bars. She has been self-producing and releasing original music along with creative music videos for five years now. During a transitional time last year, Eva moved out of her NY apartment and went on a spontaneous solo road trip for five months. The music she wrote on the journey is currently in the progress of becoming her next album, titled “Worth The Drive.” www.evagertz.com

Thaddeus Hogarth continues his musical evolution as an award-winning singer/songwriter who plays guitar and harmonica, balancing it with his career as guitar faculty at Berklee College of Music. Born in England and raised in St. Kitts, West Indies, his musical influences range from the 70’s soulful styles of Bill Withers and Sly Stone to the hypnotic grooves and sociopolitical commentary of the early reggae movement in the West Indies. The feel is raw and organic. He has written several educational books which form the basis of his online guitar class which has over 500,000 enrollees. Thaddeus is a Bose artist. “… Take a healthy dose of Sly and The Family Stone, add a liberal pinch of Stevie Wonder, put on your dancing shoes and boogie to the music of Thaddeus Hogarth …“– –Bruce Gelerman, NPR. https://thaddeushogarth.com
