Maya Ludtke Artist StatementAs a transnational and transracial Chinese American adoptee, I seek to reflect my own emerging identities and personality, and affirm AAPI beauty through my artwork.
I am drawn to bold prints and color combinations representing outfits I would love to wear. I often return to pieces for many rounds of editing- adding new elements, changing colors, or adjusting expressions. Sometimes the details are intentionally left for the viewer to fill in with whatever they imagine. This approach reminds me that it’s okay to not be finished and that creativity and change are always possible. All the pieces are acrylic paint on canvas or paper. This exhibition is a first for me- I hope you enjoy!
Yisi Liu Artist Statement:
I am a collage artist whose work is rooted in fashion, feminism, and empowerment. Drawing from the visual language of style, editorial imagery, and contemporary culture, I construct layered compositions that celebrate women as complex, independent, joyful, and powerful forces.
Each piece honors women’s wit, grace, and self possession. Through acts of deconstruction and reassembly, I confront inherited narratives of femininity and dismantle restricted ideals of what a woman should look like, desire, or embody. In my practice, the reuse of images becomes both a method and a statement. It transforms editorial images into a site of expression, resistance, and reinvention rather than ornament.
My collages center women who take up space unapologetically. They exist with confidence, humor, and autonomy. By reclaiming the female image, I aim to create visual affirmations that hold strength without rigidity and softness without submission. The work invites viewers to reconsider femininity as expansive, dynamic, and self defined.
