Exhibition Reception for Daniel Morel: Regards sur le Vodou

Fri. Nov. 15, 2024 at 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us for an Exhibition Reception for Daniel Morel: Regards sur le Vodou at ROOTED Armory Cafe located at 191 Highland Ave. in Somerville, MA.  The exhibition runs from November 15 – December 13, 2024.

For over 40 years, Morel has documented his native country, capturing culture, history and people – covering coups d’état, numerous presidents, ceremonies and pilgrimages, demonstrations and massacres, hurricanes or harvests. His photographs have appeared in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The Wall Street Journal and throughout the world. He was the resident photographer for the Associated Press for 14 years until 2004, and has received a Citation for Excellence from the Overseas Press Club of America, the AP Award of Excellence and the Sam Chavkin Prize for Integrity in Latin American Journalism.

Morel began photographing vodou pilgrimages and ceremonies in Haiti in 1982. Vodou is a popular religion born of the syncretism of different African cults, and Catholic beliefs and practices imposed on enslaved Africans. His photos offer a glimpse of pilgrimages and ceremonies at three of Haiti’s most important Vodou sites: Lakou Souvenance (Gonaïves), Calvaire Miracle (Western Department) and Saut-d’Eau (Central Plateau).
