Arts at the Armory Spotlight Series Presents Sweet Honey in the Rock

Sat. Mar. 25, 2023 at 7:00 pm

The Center for Arts at the Armory welcomes Grammy Award® nominated Sweet Honey in the Rock to the stage as part of our Spotlight Series in March 2023. The musical collective’s most recent album release, #LoveInEvolution, is the 24th recording in their legacy of tight harmonies and arts-based activism that spans four decades. Sweet Honey in the Rock and its core founding members: Nitanju Bolade Casel, Aisha Kahlil, Carol Maillard, and Louise Robinson have toured the world with their powerful sound.

Sweet Honey in the Rock was featured in two PBS specials, performed at the National Memorial Service for Nelson Mandela, and were invited by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama to sing at the White House. The musical collective was formed when the four women met as members of the D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company in 1973. Sweet Honey in the Rock harnesses their varied techniques to keep innovating their styled sound: in 2008 the group was commissioned by the Alvin Ailey Dance Company to compose its 50th anniversary program and also wrote original lyrics for William Banfield’s “Symphony 10: Affirmations for a New World.”

The ACLU of Massachusetts is proud to partner with Arts at the Armory to sponsor Sweet Honey in the Rock.
