Sun. May. 28, 2023 at 7:00 pm

****SOLD OUT**** Get ready for a phenomenal night of jazz as legendary guitarist and composer Bill Frisell takes the stage with Tony Scherr on bass and Rudy Royston on drums as part of Arts at the Armory’s Spotlight Series. With a career spanning over four decades, Frisell has become one of the most celebrated jazz musicians of our time, with Downbeat magazine citing his catalog as “the best recorded output of the decade.”

In 2012, Frisell was named an inaugural Doris Duke Artist and has received grants from United States Artists and Meet the Composer. He served as Resident Artistic Director for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Roots of Americana series from 2013-2015 and was a beneficiary of the first FreshGrass Composition commission in 2016. Frisell has also been a Resident Artistic Director for San Francisco Jazz.

Tony Scherr is a versatile musician based in New York City who plays acoustic and electric bass, as well as guitar, in a range of line-ups, often with a downtown vibe. Scherr began his career playing with Woody Herman as a teenager and has since gone on to perform with a variety of artists, including Russ Gershon’s Either/Orchestra, John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards, and Sophie B. Hawkins. Scherr has toured extensively throughout the United States, Japan, and Europe and currently runs his own recording studio from his home.

Royston, originally from Fort Worth, Texas, has been a professional teacher, drummer, and percussionist for nearly 20 years and has played with numerous jazz greats, including Javon Jackson, Les McCann, and The Mingus Big Band.

Together with Frisell, Scherr and Royston create a dynamic trio that showcases their vast musical talents and range of experience.

Doors open at 7:00PM; show starts at 8:00PM with the David Thorne Scott Duo as the opening act. Get tickets on eventbrite.
