One day Nelson was walking back to his office when he saw a stained glass shop on Medford Street in Somerville.  There were all kinds of stained glass pieces displayed in the windows.  He was curious and fascinated by it and went into the shop.  He looked around and met the artist, Daniel Maher.  He asked Daniel if he taught stained glass classes, and Daniel responded that  he was not doing so right then. Since Nelson’s office was not far from the shop, he used to stop by during his lunch break.  One day Daniel told him that he was going to start a class, and the rest is history.  Nelson signed up, got hooked, and continued practicing the stained glass skills.  Nelson has also taken stained glass classes at the Cambridge Adult Education Center and at the Whittemore-Durgin Glass Company in Rockland, MA.

Nelson’s involvement in the community overlaps with his stained glass work. A couple of years ago, he did fundraising for a local non-profit organization’s, The Welcome Project, Immigrant Assistant Fund program.  Every day, December 1st through the 24th, in 2021 he posted on Facebook a picture of a different stained glass piece, and the first person who donated to the Welcome Project won that day’s stained glass piece. All the money raised went to the organization to help immigrants who had lost their jobs due to the COVID pandemic.  Last year he also did fundraising for Groundwork Somerville, a non-profit organization that works to cultivate the next generation of environmental leaders in the city.  Since he came to this country, he has worked in the culinary field and the human services field.  In December 2021 he decided to dedicate his time just to stained glass.

Originally from El Salvador, Nelson left his country in the mid-’80s due to the political turmoil and the beginning of a civil war. He lives and continues his stained glass work in Somerville, MA.
