Weekly Feedback ♦ Visiting Poets ♦ Inspiring Readings

Somerville is a great town for poets and writers, of all levels. This discussion-based workshop aims to provide a forum for poets who have never stopped writing to new poets or poets who need to get back into writing and hearing new ideas.

Each session will begin with two city poets or winter poems, and classes will end with twenty-minute readings by visiting poets. Topics will include form, line, structure, generative writing, and notebooks.

Flexible pricing. Taught by local MFA faculty.

Dates: April 1 & April 8

Songwriters in the Round

Wed. Apr. 01, 2026 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

April Fools Day is a great day for music.

On 4/1, Songwriters in the Round at the Rooted Café at the Somerville Armory will feature one fool among the performers, but we’re not saying which performer it is. Is it Theo Griffin, whose brainy yet propulsive lyrics and unpredictable melodies show both deep groove and deep thought? Is it Adrian Sicam, a funky, polished, sultry keyboard player, singer, and Gentleman of R&B? How about guitarist Dinty Child, the “glue guy” connecting singer-songwriters in the Boston area for decades? Or how about pianist David Thorne Scott, your host and the frequent butt of onstage jokes? You’ll have to come and form your own opinion. Will there be joke songs? Maybe. No guarantees. We’re keeping you guessing.

Admission is Free (suggested donation $10-$20)

Songwriters in the Round

Songwriters in the Round is a warm, welcoming event where people can enjoy food and drink as well as chance meetings and conversation. But everyone becomes quiet when four songwriters take the stage to take turns playing songs, occasionally joining each other on harmony vocals or guitar licks. In between songs, the audience listens while the performers discuss music and life in general. “I was inspired by the ‘guitar pulls’ of the Bluebird Café in Nashville,” host David Thorne Scott says, “but with a wider variety. There is folk and country, but also rock, R&B, soul, jazz, and musical theater.”

Four songwriters take the stage, seated in a comfortable semi-circle. They take turns playing songs, occasionally joining in with each other on harmony vocals or guitar licks. The format encourages conversation between the writers, which gives the audience an opportunity to hear these creative people talk as if in their own living rooms. Inspired by the “guitar pulls” of the legendary Bluebird Café in Nashville.

You might hear a young up-and-coming pro, an established mid-career performer and mentor, and a cherished elder of the scene — all sharing music. The growing relationships will warm your heart and enrich your soul. Come every week as the lineup shifts and new friends are made.

Hosted by Somerville singer/songwriter David Thorne Scott. Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Donations welcome.

Part of the ROOTED Armory Café Series. Café menu is available here. Beer and wine also available!
