Songwriters in the Round

The performers on the October 15th Songwriters in the Round are traveling from far and near to bring you their voices.

Songwriters in the Round

Janet Feld is someone you’d want to hear serenade you around a campfire. She is a veteran of bringing beauty into the spaces of everyday life. From Rhode Island comes the strong voice and the mystical power of Meera Raphael. Up from New York City is a traveling bard who literally lives for this kind of thing. Rupert Wates is his name, and if you heard him back in June you will definitely be telling all your friends not to miss this appearance. Hosting all these hijinks is someone from closer to home: Mark Stepakoff. His voice will echo through your mind for days afterwards because his unique perspective is so winning.

You might hear a young up-and-coming pro, an established mid-career performer and mentor, and a cherished elder of the scene — all sharing music. The growing relationships will warm your heart and enrich your soul. Come every week as the lineup shifts and new friends are made.

All ages welcome.

Our songwriters this week

Multi award winning singer-songwriter Rupert Wates combines unforgettable songs with virtuoso guitar playing. His music is the fruit of twenty years at the top of his profession. Folk tinged, with flavors of jazz and even classical, it bears the impression of his English roots as well as his years in New York City and on the road in America. By turns witty, erudite and moving, his songs will go straight to your heart. Performing an average of 120 shows annually across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, Wates prefers intimate listening rooms where the focus is on connection and storytelling. He was voted Artist of the Year in both 2013 and 2016 by Concerts In Your Home and was their most-booked performer for five consecutive years. In 2018, he was a finalist in the Kerrville New Folk Song Contest and named an Emerging Artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. https://www.rupertwatesmusic.com/

Janet Feld is an award-winning performing songwriter, appearing at folk festivals and coffeehouses from coast to coast throughout a nearly four-decade career. She has recorded 6 CDs, including her latest release, Kerrville Covers – a tribute to a few of her dear friends’ amazing songs heard at the campfires of the Kerrville Folk Festival. Janet’s been teaching general music classes and private lessons to people of all ages since the 1980s. Since 2000, she’s been teaching guitar and songwriting at The Passim School of Music and is the founder and Chief Music Officer at Janet’s Planet: Music Lessons for Humanoids. Janet also published her first book for music teachers, Practicing Safe Music – Create an emotionally safe and magical experience for your music students, while rocking your self-care.

Meera Raphael is a spitfire folk-rock singer-songwriter from Rhode Island invoking the Divine Feminine with a voice many describe as ethereal and angelic, yet also epic and intense. Her poetry is introspective and inspiring, combining multicultural mystic traditions and contemporary theories of psychology and sociology in a quest to grapple with the complexities of the human condition. Her mission is to be the voice of Mystic Revolt, to spur both an awakening of both spiritual and social consciousness in her listeners, and make music that is a catalyst for positive change, for Love Peace and Justice for All https://linktr.ee/meeraraphael

Your host, Boston area singer-songwriter Mark Stepakoff, is widely admired on the New England folk music scene for his mix of wry humorous material and poignant ballads, in the vein of artists such as John Prine and Loudon Wainwright III. He has won numerous songwriting awards and his songs have reached as high as number 3 on the national folk radio airplay chart. Mark performs frequently in the Boston area. Among the artists he has opened for are Bill Morrissey, Steve Forbert, Christine Lavin, and Cheryl Wheeler. www.markstepakoff.com

Songwriters in the Round

Wed. Oct. 15, 2025 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

1st & 3rd Wednesdays at ROOTED Cafe at 7 PM

Four songwriters take the stage, seated in a comfortable semi-circle. They take turns playing songs, occasionally joining in with each other on harmony vocals or guitar licks. The format encourages conversation between the writers, which gives the audience an opportunity to hear these creative people talk as if in their own living rooms. Inspired by the “guitar pulls” of the legendary Bluebird Café in Nashville.

You might hear a young up-and-coming pro, an established mid-career performer and mentor, and a cherished elder of the scene — all sharing music. The growing relationships will warm your heart and enrich your soul. Come every week as the lineup shifts and new friends are made.

Hosted by Somerville singer/songwriter David Thorne Scott. Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Donations welcome.

Part of the ROOTED Armory Café Series. Café menu is available here. Beer and wine also available!
