Songwriters in the Round

Wed. Jan. 15, 2025 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

1st & 3rd Wednesdays at ROOTED Cafe at 7 PM

Four songwriters take the stage, seated in a comfortable semi-circle. They take turns playing songs, occasionally joining in with each other on harmony vocals or guitar licks. The format encourages conversation between the writers, which gives the audience an opportunity to hear these creative people talk as if in their own living rooms. Inspired by the “guitar pulls” of the legendary Bluebird Café in Nashville.

Free Admission (suggested donation $10-$20)

Happy New Year! We are psyched to begin again the top rated hangout for People In The Know called Songwriters in the Round. The Rooted Café is still a great place to socialize, listen to music, and get some great food and drink. Beer and wine available for those of you not doing Dry January.

We are welcoming back some old friends to the Somerville Armory this time. Sarah Brindell is a legendary local singer with an omnivorous musical style that is heavily influenced by reggae and soul. Dinty Child is a charismatic performer and road warrior with his band Session Americana. Our good friend Derek Rando is making the trip down from Marblehead to bring you his introspective yet passionate music. And your host David Thorne Scott will spin the wheel and perform some songs for you which may have a jazz, country, theater, or rock flair — anybody’s guess.

This event will not be livestreamed. It will not be released on Spotify. It will not be recorded for posterity. If you miss it, you’ll miss it!

The Armory Café is a warm, welcoming place where people can enjoy food and drink as well as chance meetings and conversation. But everyone becomes quiet when four songwriters take the stage to take turns playing songs, occasionally joining each other on harmony vocals or guitar licks. In between songs, the audience listens while the performers discuss music and life in general. “I was inspired by the ‘guitar pulls’ of the Bluebird Café in Nashville,” host David Thorne Scott says, “but with a wider variety. There is folk and country, but also rock, R&B, soul, jazz, and musical theater.”

Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. This program is supported in part by the Somerville Arts Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The event is free but you may want to donate $10-$20 for the performers.

Part of the ROOTED Armory Café Series. Food, snacks, coffee, tea, beer and wine available!

You might hear a young up-and-coming pro, an established mid-career performer and mentor, and a cherished elder of the scene — all sharing music. The growing relationships will warm your heart and enrich your soul. Come every week as the lineup shifts and new friends are made.

All ages welcome.

Our songwriters this week

Sarah Brindell is a songwriter, arranger, producer, vocalist, and keyboardist. Raised in San Francisco, CA, by a family of professional musicians, composers and published writers, her original music blends rich harmonies, stunning vocals, and infectious grooves into a melodious sonic palette of neo-soul, jazz, samba, and reggae. With touring credits around the world, she has shared the stage and recorded with many renowned artists including Norah Jones, Carole King, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, and Raul Midon. Her original songs can be heard on many television shows including MTV’s Made. https://www.sarahbrindell.com/

Dinty Child is a longtime member of the Boston roots/folk scene. A fearless multi-instrumentalist he can most often be seen with the band Session Americana, as well as the Chandler Travis Philharmonic, the unapologetically loud and grimy Catbirds, as sensitive sideman to any number of singer/songwriters, including Rose Cousins and Kris Delmhorst, and even fronting the twenty piece party band, the Funky White Honkies. Many people know that Dinty is a great songwriter, but as a ‘band guy’ he rarely performs solo so having a chance to share the stage and his songs in this format will make it a special night. www.dintychild.com

Derek Rando is a Massachusetts-based songwriter and front man of the band, Tenderhoof. The music is introspective and has the dark shaking hands with the optimistic…partly sunny with a promise of rain. bluetomorrowmusic.com https://instagram.com/derekrando

Your host this week is David Thorne Scott, a singer and songwriter in jazz and Americana styles. His current project is Animal Spirits: a new musical about economist John Maynard Keynes. A longtime resident of Somerville, he organized Songwriters in the Round to foster a creative, dynamic music scene here. He believes that music can bring a community together like nothing else. “At a time of great conflict in our country – when words often fail us – music has the power to bridge divides… David Thorne Scott explores the intersection of Jazz and Americana, city and country, instrumentation and lyrics to create lush compositions and covers that are unifying, and healing, in their beauty.” – Laurie Fanell, Eponymous Review www.davidthornescott.com
