Artist Bio:
Laura Scheuerell is a painter, collager, mixed media artist, educator, and writer from the Boston area who uses her work to process her daily life. She thinks of her art as a memory bank that records impressions, marks special moments or inner thoughts, expresses feelings, and has the power to usher a viewer into an alternate mental and emotional space. She likes to investigate themes and tell stories through layers. She pays attention to what captures her curiosity. It has always been her compass and balance. You can visit Laura’s website here.

In lieu of a reception, Laura has created this video as an accompaniment to her exhibition at ROOTED Armory Café this month.

Serenity Circle Open Mic Night for Suicide Awareness

Serenity Circle Open Mic Night for Suicide Awareness

Thu. Aug. 17, 2023 at 6:30 pm

You are invited to join in on a Serenity Circle, an open mic event on suicide prevention, offered on Thursday, August 17th from 6:30PM-8:30PM EST in person in Boston at the Center for Arts at the Armory (191 Highland Ave, Somerville, MA 02143).

This casual, intimate Open Mic Night event is being held as a reminder that we need to all collectively, keep marching forth, together, hand in hand, in support, in camaraderie, in love, and in solidarity.

It’s been a while since I’ve hosted a Serenity Circle. It’s been over 20 years since I attempted to die by suicide while I was just a high school student… I am forever grateful that day, my attempt failed. Despite being severely depressed several times still in college and after college, I continued to chase my goals and follow my dreams and staying alive.

Even though it may seem a morbid topic, we need to stop making talking about suicide so taboo.

Especially during the pandemic, it is more important than ever to reach out to your loved ones and to check in to see how they are doing, having COMPASSION, EMPATHY and REAL TALK about how they are feeling, going about day by day, and to know that they are not alone.

There is no exact right way to approach this topic, but there are better ways to approach the topic of suicide.

In this Serenity Circle event, participants will be sharing in 3-5 minute segments in an Open Mic event dedicated to suicide awareness and prevention.

You’ll get a chance to witness people who are open to sharing and discussing mental health and suicide and wanting to learn about what you and others can do to offer support and prevent suicide.

We don’t have to suffer alone, and we don’t have to let our loved ones suffer alone.

Let’s create more awareness about suicide prevention so we don’t have to lose any loved ones to suicide.
