Union Festival Improv Workshops: “The Form is No Form”

Union Festival Improv Workshops: “The Form is No Form”

Sat. Aug. 24, 2019 at 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

This workshop is part of Union Improv Festival 2019. You do not need to be a performer in the festival to register for workshops.

DESCRIPTION: The phrase “montage” has become a dirty word most often used to justify sloppy improv sets from the uninspired and unprepared. We’ve all heard someone toss out moments before going on stage “no specific form, just a montage!” But performing without a form is not an invitation to do sub par work. It’s a chance to challenge yourself to create a form on the fly unique to the people you find yourself on stage with. This workshop will focus on two person and group scenes with special attention to moves and patterns which can inform your show and change your groups “montage” into that specific shows unique signature form.

INSTRUCTOR BIO: Alex grew up in Newton Massachusetts (hometown boy!) where he discovered improv on his short form High School team “Children of the Candy Corn” at Newton South. He and some friends ran the Chicago indie venue the Upstairs Gallery from 2010-2014 where he regularly produced stupid conceptual shows or other things he thought were fun. He was iO Chicago’s creative director from 2015 – 2016. He performed all over Chicago on various independent and iO Harold teams from 2009-2016 including Pizza Party, Trash Daddiez, Bass Mountain, and American Standard. He now lives in LA.

Sat. Aug. 24, 2019 at 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Brendan Hogan is a Boston area singer-songwriter and guitar player with a foot in the blues. He’s a 20 year veteran in Boston public radio, most notably with WUMB since 2011. His musical touchstones are the 50s/60s folk revival, classic blues, and Dylan-esque songwriters.

Hummingbird Syndicate is a collective of like-minded musicians, led by singer/songwriters Lynn Shipley and Jon Macey. On stage and in the studio they shift deftly between a dynamic power pop jangle and a softer, folk/rock shimmer. Most songs feature three- and four-part harmonies and a 1960s/70s vibe, blending sunny Laurel Canyon folk and East Coast urban pop with an edgy dash of early ‘70s British rock. All of this is delivered with a modern twist by veteran musicians drawing on myriad musical and cultural influences.

This show is free but donations are welcome!
