Happy June! It may be a little damp and cool outside, but things are hoppin’ in here. Be sure to check out all of our upcoming events, both in the Performance Hall and in the cafe. We’ve got everything from comedy to music to plants — yes, we said “plants” — to creative writing over the next week. Don’t miss any of the action.
Memorial Day Weekend is almost here! It wasn’t that long ago that it seemed as if winter would never end, but we’ve made it to this celebratory weekend that means “Summer Preview” — YES!! Many of you may have the day off from work — why not come check out our cafe? We have artisan sammies and fresh baked treats not to mention a delightful selection of bevvies ranging from coffee and tea and smoothies to beer and wine. Don’t forget the (daily) free parking!
We’re open our regular hours — 8am-6pm — this Memorial Day. Check out the menu here.
In addition to the cafe being an excellent gathering place for you and your friends, it is also a show venue. This Memorial Day, the cafe is thrilled to host four rising singer-songwriters, Jake Shane, Jack Dean, Ian Fitzgerald, and John Faraone, swapping songs in the Round. These two New Englanders, a Nashvillian and a Brit all have unique styles which fit loosely into the Americana genre. The show runs from 7pm-9:30pm. Come early for a delicious craft beer and snack!
Was our last blog post really in March? My how time flies when you’re having fun! But right now we really want to make sure you are all aware of the fun coming up this Friday, May 8th! That is the night we are kicking off our fundraising effort to soundproof the performance hall.
As you can see by our ever-growing list of events, we are always doing our best to bring great programming to our stage both in the Hall and in the cafe, but we are somewhat limited in our offerings because we currently have restrictions on the decibel levels allowed. By soundproofing the space, we will be able to dramatically expand our event offerings. This is where you come in… By attending our Soundproofing Benefit Concert THIS FRIDAY (5/8), you will be helping us towards our goal. Tickets are $15/$12 students and can be purchased at the door or in advance here
We are so excited for this night of world music featuring Esthema, Goli, and 35th Parallel. We know it will be a night to remember and a great first step towards achieving our soundproofing goal.
Is everyone enjoying the first week of spring? Okay, so maybe the temperatures haven’t felt quite “seasonal” yet but as New Englanders we need to embrace the little milestones we set for ourselves; whether it’s St. Patrick’s Day or the Red Sox season opener, those markers in the sand keep us going.
And, so does art and the sense of community that comes with supporting it! So make a plan to visit the Armory to get a little more color in your life. Here’s one surefire way to accomplish that: AniMAtic Boston. On Wednesday, March 25th in the Cafe the Boston animation community welcomes the great Tom Snyder. Tom has been writing and creating animation in Boston for over 30 years. He founded Tom Snyder Productions, (which later became Soup2Nuts) created the Comedy Central hit show Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist and recently teamed up with Jonathan Katz once again to create the web series Explosion Bus. Now that’s a colorful guy!
Doors open at 7pm for networking opportunities with other area animators and members of the community before Tom’s talk starts at 7:30pm.
Spring is coming, we can actually feel it here at the Armory!
It occurred to us this morning that most of our blog updates have been about nothing but the weather; we even took to referring to snow as “the s-word!” Yet with the sun shining so brightly and Daylight Savings Time giving us another hour of it, as well as predictions that the mercury might even touch 50 degrees this week, we are officially optimistic that the Somerville earth will eventually thaw!
And, as it does, you’ll have no shortage of great reasons to come visit us! Check out the March calendar, we promise you’ll start feeling warmer already!
