Somerville Arts Council Musical Theater Camp

July 5-22, 2016//8 to 13-year-olds

A summer camp focused on musical theater resulting in a full production of Space Pirates

Visual Arts Week

This is the week to explore different aspects of visual arts in 8 half-day sessions.  Try drawing, painting, illustration, and more. Sign up for the full program (4 days) or just for specific individual sessions that interest you.Cost: $200 for four days, $100 for half-days only, $60 for a full day or $30 for a single half-day session (Materials included).
July 25th:
* Lay it on Thick but it’s Okay to be Wishy Washy (Morning Session):
However, you like to paint, this class is for you! If you have never painted, then this is a great place to learn the foundations of painting.
* Mask Making Exploration (Afternoon Session):

You will explore the process of mask-making with quick-dry clay.

July 26th:
* Out of Body Sculptures (Morning Session):
You will create a sculpture that has a relationship to your body. You will explore methods of connecting materials and the choice to have the piece echo shapes that occur naturally in the body or counter them.
* Pen & Ink Illustration (Afternoon Session):
You will learn how to apply new techniques in your illustration projects. You will explore media such as India Ink using technical pens, as well as fine-tip pens.
July 27th:
* Visual Language (Morning Session):
You will look into ways the fine arts converge with design, communication, and movements for change. You will be making different forms of posters with stencils as well as designing tools for communicating.
* Visual Mapping (Afternoon Session):
Visual mapping will allow you to discover and create new ideas while building connections, strengthening focus and boosting expression.
July 28th:
* Stage Makeup (Morning Session):
Learn the basics of stage makeup, and how to highlight your unique facial features on stage.
* Wool Sculptures (Afternoon Session):
You will learn how to turn unspun wool into your own miniature sculptures with the help of special barbed needles; no previous experience is needed.

Arts Discovery Week

This week, we explore many different art forms with 10 different half-day sessions. Sign up for the full week or just for the sessions that interest you.

Cost: $200/week or, $100 for half-days only, $50 for a full day or $25 for a single half-day session (Materials included).

August 1st:
* Squiggles & String (Morning Session):
Learn to “draw” with string and other objects.
* Sweet Painting (Afternoon Session):
This activity will satisfy your sweet tooth! Bring in a photo of your pet, friend, parent or yourself and we’ll create a painting of it with candy.
August 2nd:
* Puppets Together (Morning Session):
With a pre-sewn cloth/felt model puppet in hand, you will learn effective ways to perform with puppet characters.
* Colors of Summer Around Me (Afternoon Session):
You will explore their colors and forms, adding your own backgrounds and textures, so that you will paint both from observation and using your imagination!
August 3rd:
* Animal Superheroes (Morning Session):
Create a magical animal puppet whose powers and failings are both super-sized!
* Theater Exploration (Afternoon Session):
Learn acting by developing skills through different games, play, exercises, and using your imagination.
August 4th:
* Creatures of Eric Carle (Morning Session):
You will be creating creatures in the style of Eric Carle.
* Fun Mixed-Media Sculptures (Afternoon Session):
You will create either a human-like figure or an animal, with various materials such as modeling clay, paper, wire and aluminum foil.
August 5th:
* Cubist Faces (Morning Session):
You will discover organic vs. geometric shapes when mapping out your features, through the use of cut paper.
* Upcycled Fiber Art (Afternoon Session):
You will explore different techniques of fiber art, including finger knitting and large scale weaving.Schedule for this program:

Youth Arts Arise

August 8-12, for 11 to 16-year-olds.

Dive deep into just a few artistic disciplines; morning classes and afternoon classes each build up a different thematic area.These classes build progressively over the course of the week, so enrollment in the full week (for either one class or both) is required.This program is FREE!
“Painting Your Way” & “Documentary Filmmaking”
* Morning Session: Painting Your Way
During this workshop, you’ll be introduced to a variety of contemporary art styles and create paintings your way.
* Afternoon Session: Documentary Filmmaking
During this workshop, you’ll be given the chance to plan and produce a short documentary film based on a local subject of your choice.

Center Stage Somerville (Already full)
August 15-26, for 8 to 12-year-olds

A musical theater program producing a stage adaptation of a popular kids story. Every participant will have a major role in the final performance. Note: must be able to attend both weeks. Fee-based program; contact organizers: +1-617-699-1730 for details.
