Sponsored by the City of Somerville’s SomerVIVA Immigrant Outreach Initiative, this event is in honor of the anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2017, and in celebration of the vibrant Haitian culture here in Somerville. Following the 2017 earthquake, many Haitian residents turned to family, friends, and the larger Somerville community, and this served as the starting point for their rebuilding process.
This is a celebration of culture, food, dance and positivity to truly focus on what matters: our humanity. From event organizer and Somerville High School student Ceres Odivin, “I have been a resident of Somerville for the past 6 years. As a young student and particularly with everything happening at the federal level, I feel that it’s important to have a cultural event to show our Somerville community what Haiti is about, and to help Haitian residents who live here not to forget where they came from.”
