Tale: In this Grimms’ fairy tale, a poor boy travels to the market to sell the family cow so that he and his mother will have food. However, Jack meets a peddler of magic beans before he gets to the market and trades the cow for the beans. His mother is very angry and tosses the beans out the window. In the night, a huge beanstalk grows from the magic beans. Jack climbs it and enters a rich giant’s kingdom, high above the earth…
Class Description: Participants will create hand puppets that can represent village people, using pre-sewn felt hand forms. They will also make some “props,” including a fabric beanstalk and a cardboard cow. As Margaret Moody (teacher) narrates the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, she will invite children to act out some of the scenes using their own puppets. “Puppet Tales” emphasizes the fun of dramatic play and its power to bring a group together.
