Flirting. Death. Revenge. Magic. What is the epic Kalevala? Join us on Sunday, November 11th at the Armory Cafe in Somerville, and find out! We are the AFTer Hours Adult Folktale Telling series, and we continue our Second Sunday series with uncensored Finnish Tales of the Kalevala.
We’ll start off with an Open Mic at 7pm, followed by this month’s Featured Teller Angela Kessler. The Kalevala is a collection of stories from Finland, passed down from the days when storytelling was for grown-ups. It has inspired artists and authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien and Philip Pullman, and is celebrated by a national holiday in Finland–Kalevala Day, February 28.
Angela Kessler has dug deep into the oral tradition of Finland as written in the Kalevala. Coming back with pockets full of love, death, and magic, she shares these tales with you in stories, songs, and poems that combine to bring the tales to life.
A co-founder of AFTer Hours, Angela has long been involved in leading participatory singing and drama events, through the Arts at the Armory series and other Greater Boston events. Angela has been entrancing audiences with stories from the Kalevala since 2005. Come experience the Kalevala for yourself!
